Internet and World Wide Web

The Internet and the World Wide Web, in particular, has created a revolution in the way information is exchanged. It has become such a powerful form of media that it has pulled away large chunks of market share from other forms of media. People look online for knowledge on a particular subject such as music, dogs or food. They look for products and services related to these same knowledge subjects.

Advertising

The Internet has allowed traditional companies to save money by reducing expenses in other types of advertising and making transactions less expensive. For online businesses, the Internet provides the framework for running nearly all of the business since the standards used to create the Internet are universal. It provides a means of communication that is unique among other forms of media.

In addition to reducing the cost of transmitting and receiving information, the Internet has reduced costs of storage.

Search Engines and Optimization

There are many different types of searchers using the Internet. The most common type is the information searcher. They mainly do their searching by using a search engine such as Google, Yahoo or MSN. They are usually not looking to buy anything unless they are researching a product or service. The other type of searcher knows what they are looking for and will go directly to the web site that they know has it. For example, if someone wants to buy a particular book and they know the title or author, they might go to a site like Amazon or Barnes & Noble. The web site should focus on the type of person they are communicating to by understanding as much about the user as possible. Optimizing a website can help it rank higher in search engines and make it more visible to users.

Versatile Medium

A web site is capable of encompassing other forms of media into itself. All of the traditional forms of media such as TV, radio, movies, newspapers, magazines and other forms of print can be incorporated into a single web page. As a result, the Internet provides versatility as well as a lower cost for displaying a message.

The Internet includes more than just web pages, however. It can be just as effective to send e-mail messages as well as having a web site. The web pages and web sites themselves belong to the part of the Internet called the World Wide Web. Email is separate from the World Wide Web because a different protocol is used for e-mail than for web services. Another aspect of the Internet is FTP which allows files to be transferred from one location to another. With FTP, you can download and upload files. The Internet also includes telnet and SSH for logging into a remote location.

Small Business

There is no doubt that the Internet has transformed business. The fact that it has lowered transaction costs is just one part. People use the Internet to find detailed information on products and services which was not available prior to the Internet. Now they use Internet to routinely check prices as well as checking to see if an item is in stock. It has allowed businesses to reduce inventory while at the same time allowing for a larger variety of goods and services. In addition, it has allowed small businesses to compete with larger ones.
